Friday Night Funkin is a rhythm game, whose first version was developed in 2020 for the 47th edition of Ludum Dare, one of the world's most prestigious game jams. This first version was so successful that its developers, now known as The Funkin' Crew, continued working on the game and adding new content, until a year later they launched a Kickstarter campaign so they could focus their attention entirely on the game. The campaign, with nearly 60,000 backers, was a resounding success.
Classic rhythm game controls
The Friday Night Funkin controls are typical of rhythm games. To follow the rhythm of the music, you need to press all the arrow keys that appear from the bottom of the screen at the right time. Somtimes all you need is a quick tap, while on other occasions you will need to hold the key down. The more accurately you press the keys, the better your score will be and the higher chances you will have of defeating your opponent. Of course, the controls are fully customizable. You can change the controls to your liking from the Options menu, using a keyboard or gamepad (both Xbox and PlayStation controllers are compatible).
An extensive and challenging Story Mode
Friday Night Funkin has two main game modes. In Story Mode, you control the game's main character (Boyfriend) and you will have to defeat opponents in order to maintain your relationship with the girl (Girlfriend). This game mode is divided into a series of levels, each with three different songs, which you can play in any of the three available difficulty modes: easy, normal or hard. Before each confrontation, you will also see a fun animation, in the classic New Grounds cartoon style, which will tie together elements of the game's story.
Dive right in with Free Mode
Although Story Mode is certainly the highlight of Friday Night Funkin, you can also play Free Mode. This game mode allows you to play any song you want to practice, at the difficulty level of your choice, at any time. As a result, if there is a song that you like more than the others or you simply feel like practicing one song in particular, you can do so in no time. The game will also keep track of your high scores, so you can know if you have gotten better with each new attempt.
Lots of songs to play
Friday Night Funkin offers more than twenty songs to play, all of them unlocked from the beginning. You don't need to unlock songs one after another or anything like that. This means that experts in rhythm games can move directly to the more difficult songs, at the harder difficulty levels. But beware, some of the songs that come later in the game are very, very difficult.
