Friday Night Funkin is an absolute phenomenon in the rhythm video game genre. The first version was developed in 2020 for the 47th edition of Ludum Dare, one of the most famous game jams in the world. Thanks to its huge success, its developers, now known as The Funkin' Crew, continued to work on the game relentlessly, until a year later they launched a Kickstarter campaign. The campaign, with nearly 60,000 backers in total, was a resounding success and has allowed them to continue working on the game full time.
Fully customizable controls
The Friday Night Funkin controls will feel familiar to anyone who has played a rhythm game before, be it Guitar Hero or any other similar title. To follow the rhythm of the music, you need to press all the arrow keys that appear from the bottom of the screen at the right time. In some cases all you need is a quick tap, while other times you will need to hold the key down for a few seconds. The more accurate you are with your key presses, the better your score will be. As you might expect, the controls are fully customizable. You can change the controls to your liking from the Options menu, using a keyboard or gamepad (both Xbox and PlayStation controllers are compatible).
Story Mode, the star of the game
Friday Night Funkin offers two main game modes. In Story Mode, you control the game's protagonist (Boyfriend), whom you will have to help defeat a series of opponents in order to maintain the girl's (Girlfriend) love. This game mode is divided into a series of levels, each with three different songs, which you can play in any of the three available difficulty modes: easy, normal or hard. What's more, at the beginning of each level you will see a fun animation in the classic cartoon style of New Grounds. These animations narrate the game's storyline.
Get to playing faster with Free Mode
Story Mode is the main mode in Friday Night Funkin, but you can also play Free Mode if you just feel like a quick game. In this mode, you can play any song you want to practice, at the difficulty level of your choosing. So, if there is a particular song that you like more than the rest or you simply feel like practicing a particular track, you can do so with just a couple of clicks. The game will also save your high scores, so you can know if you have gotten better with each new attempt.
More than twenty songs to play
Friday Night Funkin includes 22 songs, all of them unlocked from the start. However, new tracks are being added with each new update. You don't need to unlock songs one by one. This means that experts in rhythm games can move directly to the more difficult songs, at the higher difficulty levels. You decide how quickly you want to progress through the game.
The original FNF, for Mac
Download Friday Night Funkin if you like rhythm games and want to enjoy what has become one of the greatest hits of the genre in recent years. The game is free and has an extensive community of modders, thanks to which you can add lots of mods to the game, some of them with spectacular quality. An outstanding title, which can be enjoyed comfortably on Mac.
